it’s true! What
were we thinking? We had to
have been in love because it certainly wasn’t a beauty contest
that
sealed our vows. We’re
not weight loss “gurus”.
We’re just a couple of regular people who were fortunate to learn
a secret
to losing weight and keeping it off.
And, we’d like to share it
with you. Subtle
changes in our health
were beginning to have an affect on us. We weren’t sleeping
well, we had
new aches and pains, both of our doctors
warned us about the
consequences of becoming diabetic and I was getting
short of breath
faster. Obviously
headed in the wrong
direction losing weight just wasn’t happening. We’d
pretty much lost
hope and we needed something to work and work fast. What
about the new course?
Would this one work? Was it going to be another colossal
waste time? Was
it going to be different this time??? So,
off we went every Thursday
evening for a couple of hours. It became apparent really soon that this
was not
like other diet programs we’d been through before. I
remember driving home from that
first class. It was awfully quiet in the car, but not in my head.
Negative!
Was I just a bit negative? Ya
think? As
a matter of fact, Lynn and I
didn’t talk about the new program until it was Thursday again and time
to
head out for class. It was a silent conspiracy. I
found out, much to my relief,
that my wife pretty much felt like I did. The “I don’t want
to’s” were
ringing loud and clear for her too. (There is a benefit to sharing your
thoughts.) Keep

what happened to us next! Sitting
in class again
with our pasted on smiles, we did what most do, we resisted.
We
subconsciously fought any kind of change, didn’t believe or
trust what
we heard, closed our minds. So, there we were, arms
folded on our chest pretending
to listen. It
was just like being back in
elementary school. Didn’t our trainer know that our
resistance was set to
high and what she was saying wasn’t getting in? Guess not, as
she just kept
on with it. She
was saying something that
part of the growing obesity problem was because of what is
NOT in our food…
How the nutrition in the food supply of the industrialized world is so highly
processed and treated that what used to be
nutritious is no longer. Today
food comes in containers not
from a garden. It’s processed to preserve shelf life and
packaged to appeal
to the eye. The nutritional content is listed on
the side of the
container only because the government made the manufacturer put it
there. Hmmm,
we glanced at each other
with slightly elevated interest. “I didn’t know that”
was the message in
our eyes. Maybe, just maybe, we were beginning to
let some of this get
through. She
went on about how our bodies
were not getting the simple essential building blocks
needed to maintain
optimal health. Well there’s a clue. How
simple is that to fix? This was
beginning to be more and more enlightening and informative. Just
by changing the kinds
of and amounts of food we ate we would begin to see
weight and inch
loss results. We might even see some
changes in other areas too,
like being more regular, sleeping well through the night and not having
those
hunger urges or sugar cravings. And,
everything we needed
to make the change was at our local grocery store.
We don’t have to buy
some pre-packaged, prepare and probably pre-digested product or take a
special
stomach bloating filler-upper pill. Hallelujah! It
wouldn’t cost any more than
what we had allotted for our existing grocery budget! That was most excellent news!
The more we listened the more we understood what was happening to our bodies. We were intrigued. Logic always went a long way with me. 7
simple rules and
a quick survey… Only
seven simple rules to
follow? A quick survey to determine our metabolic
typing? We
didn’t have to join a gym? Really?? We
unfolded our arms, sat
up in our seats and started to actively take in what was
being said. You may be asking yourself, like we asked/images."Could this really work for me?" All I have to do is learn seven steps, apply them to my daily eating habits, balance my proteins, carbs and fats. This was getting better and better, easier and easier.
The
answer had always been
there, just hidden from our view. A
plausible story began to unfold
every Thursday night for the next couple of weeks. We’re
eating a 21st
Century diet for our caveman bodies. Food
has evolved much quicker
than have our digestive tracks. Eating fresh, raw and natural
like our
ancestors did would turn the fat storing mechanism off. And, it can
work for
you, too! We
started to learn about how
our bodies worked and what happened every time we put
something on our
mouths. We
got support from our
coach/trainer and the others in the class every week. Frankly,
neither of us are the
ripped abs type. We had no desire to look like Arnold at his prime.
Trim, yes.
Fit, yes. But, we had no need to impress anyone with our bodies other
than
ourselves. No
one else was going to make the
choices for you. It's up to you to take control of your life.
Here
was one of the most invaluable life
lessons we learned in this course: With
